Environmentally Friendly and Safe Asphalt Sealcoating

The current industry standard is the use of Coal Tar sealcoating, which has been found to off-gas toxic fumes, and is banned in several municipalities, such as Royal Oak, Ann Arbor, and West Bloomfield. Research has shown that exposure to these fumes can be hazardous, especially for children. In fact, studies indicate that playing on a coal tar-sealed driveway in the summer can be as harmful as smoking cigarettes (Mahler, et al).

At our Icon, we prioritize your health and safety by using asphalt emulsion sealcoating, which new research has shown provides the same sealcoating benefits, and is environmentally friendly and safe for your family.

Don’t wait until your driveway shows signs of irreparable wear—start protecting it today with regular sealcoating.

Protect Your Family from Carcinogenic Vapors

Coal tar-based driveway sealers are known to off-gas harmful fumes, particularly during warm weather. These fumes contain high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are toxic and carcinogenic. Prolonged exposure, especially for children playing on or near a freshly sealed driveway, can significantly increase the risk of developing respiratory issues and cancers. At Icon, we exclusively use materials that are healthy and environmentally friendly. Our asphalt emulsion mixture does not emit any fumes that are dangerous to adults, children, or pets.

Avoid Groundwater and Soil Contamination

When it rains, coal tar sealers can wash off driveways and seep into the surrounding soil, carrying toxic PAHs with them. This runoff not only contaminates the soil but also poses a serious risk to groundwater and nearby bodies of water, and can even penetrate the water table. The persistent nature of these chemicals means they can accumulate in the environment, harming plants, wildlife, and potentially entering the our food chain. At Icon we take environmental preservation seriously. Our goal is to bring the sealcoating industry in Michigan to a new  environmental standard that is safe for us and our children.
